I've added a new experimental Linux distribution to the mix (link in first post). This should theoretically work on "any" relatively recent/updated Linux system. I've tested on a couple "virgin" Linux installs that have no development tools installed, both based on Debian-style Linux (Ubuntu and Mint). Build environment is Linux Mint 17.2.
Text-to-speech is built-in, and there are some short instructions included for getting it set up on your system (uses Festival TTS).
I'd be very interested in anyone's experience with this version.
Also for anyone building their own on Linux, I've updated the main Readme in the Git repo with much simpler instructions for building with TTS enabled.
Cheers,
