why is the hardware closed source?

I mean the developers are obviously into the whole open source idea (otherwise they would not publish the code for the software) but why is it then that they don't open source the hardware as well? Isn't the hardware finished yet or will it never be open sourced?

What would be the advantages of having os hw?

The main reason is: we want to keep control over the complete manufacturing process of the hardware.
If it was Open Source we'd surely see chinese clones soon without a chance to handle the support for these.

There also were enormous initial costs for the prototyping, the test environment, shipping forth & back across the globe - all this needs to be covered.

Skilled hw designers are always welcome to join us. But there's barely a handful of geniusses willing to share their knowlegde for free.

One of them is Bill Nesbitt, chief hardware & software designer of the AutoQuad project.
Respecting his rights on his intellectual property isn't something we need to debate about ... I hope!

And if you are a good hardware designer, it's not super voodoo magic to make another electronics. Then you have your own electronics that you can port open software. Internet it full of material that can be used to make one.

I had this feeling ever since I carefully examined the board layout under the UBLOX GPS module and compared that to UBLOX very explicit recommendations on PCB layout for their modules. A lot of those important/crucial recommendations have not been followed on the AQ6 board.

Is it closed source to avoid embarrassing comments from those who have the experience and knowledge to comment on those aspects of the design ?
