You will need different firmware to use brush-less motors.
aqv7.0.r442.b1848-hwv8.6-quatos-ext_esc works for this as does the non-quatos version.
I'm curious about this board as well. I have one of Joerg's BLDC boards and this seems to have a slight edge in terms of features. I like that it has the ability to power other devices with either 3v3 or 5v -- seems helpful for things like doing a FPV quad. Also it has voltage sense, which is helpful -- rather than running it straight off the battery directly to M4. The CAN bus connectivity is great for future proofing. However, I think I'll continue with my Joerg BLDC and maybe go with the upcoming M4 PDB, which would allow for larger multi-rotors than a quad.
