Flying AQ6 with DIMU near / inside steel buildings

Postby HD1080ide » Thu Jan 21, 2016 11:10 pm

Hello,

I have the AQ6 controller with DIMU and want to fly inside a big hall made of steel. It that possible in manual mode?

According to the Documentation the compass is only being used to estimate the initial heading:
[...] the compass is only used to estimate initial heading before takeoff. Once you arm and fly, the compass is no longer contributing to heading estimation and therefore not susceptible to heading distortion caused by magnetic fields in flight. [...]

But I believe that there will be a big error for the initial heading due to the metal. Do I have to turn the controller on outside of the hall and then go back in the hall or should I just execute the "Onboard tare (level) calibration" before flying?

Thanks a lot!

You can fly in manual mode because the compass is not used in manual mode. If you have no GPS antenna you can use altitude position hold inside to help control altitude.

The compass is need for flying outside with GPS in altitude position hold and mission flight modes.

The mag is only used to estimate initial heading on bootup, but its only relevant if you plan to fly using GPS.

Inside a building you wont be using GPS, so there wont be a problem. But I would recommend disconnecting the GPS antenna to make sure you dont get a lock inside (this can happen in rare cases).

I think we will soon release a new firmware that gives the option to fly in altitude hold, only depending on ACC and Baro, which is ideal for indoor flights.

But if there is no GPS available, its gonna be effectively the same as flying in altitude hold.

Thank you very much! That sounds good!

Is it also recommend to disconnect the GPS antenna even when I let the flight mode switch at the manual position?

As Jussi said if you fly inside and you would like to try the altitude hold flight mode you should disconnect the GPS antenna because you might get a GPS signal even inside.

Manual flight mode does not use the GPS so it makes no difference if it's connected or not. Inside you will find that flying in the altitude hold mode makes controlling the altitude easy because in this mode the barometer will help control altitude when there's on GPS.
