AQ Dynamic Cal Without Frame...

Postby Jdmagoo » Sat Feb 08, 2014 6:25 am

I know its much better to conduct the dynamic CAL with the board on the Frame and all electrical sources powered up, but is it still possible to cal off the frame? Will the results be acceptable in order to fly?

Im planning on a big bird and the cal could prove problematic

Looking forward to hearing from those who have conducted the cal off the frame.

Cheers

It's possible... the main reason for having it on the frame is for the mag calibration, otherwise it doesn't matter where the board is mounted. I actually tried a dynamic calibration using just a bare board once, but the calculations didn't proceed too well. I think it actually helps to have some weight attached to the board during the rotations, to smooth out the movements (it's very easy to jiggle the bare board around w/out even noticing). Or mount the board on a gimbal :)

One could also theoretically do the mag calibration separately (just run the last sim3 --mag calibration step on the data and let it improve the previous solution). I've not heard of anyone actually trying that though.
