AQ's "manual" mode is simply an attitude hold mode. You describe the attitude you desire with the pitch / roll / yaw sticks and the craft will hold it. This is the most basic mode as there is no rate control mode.

I've actually always liked the idea of an altitude hold only mode, but have never been willing to give up a radio channel to control it. Unplugging the GPS antenna doesn't require a channel... but it's hard to plug it back in while in the air.

Arducopter does 6 flight modes on one channel so it could be done without adding a channel but I would not go over four modes on one channel. On some cheap Tx the PWM output can change with temperature and then flight modes switch position can change and that is not good. Guess how I know!!!

Yea we could sneak another mode in there, which I personally wouldn't mind. But it would complicate setup. APM needs extensive (down to per type of radio if you want > 3 modes) for this. Again I personally don't mind that, but it adds some complexity on several levels (code/UI/usage).
