I was thinking of this one:

It seems a little more flexible. I can solder a switch to select voltages.

Yes, your just using the FT232 chip. That adapter should work but the 3v3 volt option isn't worth anything as the current available on 3v3 is very low. It also doesn't have inline resistors to TX and RX that the FTDI cable has.

I ran out and got the cable you recommended, and lo and behold, everything worked. I was able to upload the firmware 2.p R49 to all 5 ESCs, even the one I applied 5 volts to and probably shorted at some point.

By the way, did you solder a jumper or a switch onto the boot jumper? It would be a pain in the but to that while it is mounted in the model. I prefer a switch to avoid inadvertent shorts. What do you recommend?

The firmware uploaded and verified perfectly BUT QGC 1.3 cannot read the firmware version nor can it load the defaults or write. In fact it sometimes crashes.

What now?

There were some reports from other users as well where the v1.3 didn´t work properly - but v1.05 did.

Also dead. Sees the port I used to upload firmware in 1.3 but won't communicate at all. Any chance these are not compatible with ESC32 firmware 2.0 R49?
