3D Printing with Carbon Fiber

Postby afernan » Tue Jun 17, 2014 9:53 am

I´m just testing a new prototipe composite material for 3D Printing, based in a matrix of a high-temperature PLA termoplastic and Carbon Fiber. I´m using my standard Prusa-i3 machine with 0.5mm nozle.

I´ve printed a set of parts (see image below) with very good results at first shot with the parameters recomended. Small changes wrt ABS printing process, even simpler.

Main advantage is the mechanical properties. In particular the strength is 220% higher than the standard ABS tipically used in 3DPrinting. The "specific strength" (or strength/density) is the same than a good aluminum of 200Mpa (aeronautical).

So, this is an important step forward in prototipe manufacturing based in Carbon Fiber composite, that is just starting with incredible results. I´ll bring some copter parts made in CF to Hannover to show all you.

Angel

The pla or abs generally comes as filaments which goes into the printer. How do you feed in the carbon fiber along with it?
Or is it a new blended filament material that is available ?

It´s already blended inside the filament. The image above shows a piece of this filament

Interesting! But to be honest I am much much more interested in the Composite Honeycomb you used as a background....where did you get that - at work?

Jussi, you can set the internal filling structure using 3D printing.
A honey comb structure gives almost as much strength as full filling and takes less time and is lighter
So my guess is Angel made those pieces with his printer

Nah, I dont think so....Looks a lot like like a CF sandwiched over an Alu honeycomb.. I would seriously like to try and cut a complete 1-piece frame in a material like that. I have some dragonplate here, but that stuff looks like real aircraft grade materials as used in the A380.

Anyway, to get back on topic....I would like to see a (open source) 3D printable motor holder for M4. For 7 and 8mm coreless motors.... Just something that is easy to print and can pop on to the arms without too much fuzz.

@Jussi: yes, that´s a sandwich from AIRBUS (in fact a part of a space satellite platform). I have a lot of parts like that normally are dropped, but not really usefull for me.

But, as Srinath said I can manufacture sandwich-honeycom structures, very light with 3DPrinting with external faces fully and internal faces in honeycom. The skin thickness of the honeycom can be set from 0 to 1 (emty to full). In fact my motor brackets are done like that to save mass, while keeping inertia (see below a cutout of one of those)

Respect your very nice M4 I can help you to design any part you think can be improved.

Last year at the Maker Faire it seemed like half the exhibits were 3D printers. Angel, just bring your files, maybe we can get a few MRs printed while we're there. :) Or prototype some M4 mounts. ;)

Good idea. I'll bring a USB charged with parts to be Printed.

Angel

Where can you get/buy this carbon fiber composite material for 3D printing ?
