New favorite motor / prop combination

Postby bn999 » Mon Jun 09, 2014 1:34 pm

For a while now, I have been recommending the RTC5010 + RCT15x5.5cf prop as a very efficient, stable combination. I think I have now found one better.

I've been testing the Tiger Motors MN3508-29 (380kV) + RCT15x5.5cf combination. They have very similar performance and have an efficiency sweet spot below 50% throttle on 4S.

MN3508-29 vs RCT5010

Pros:

- Much higher quality construction
- Consistently lower vibration out of the box
- Higher efficiency (don't have hard data on how much yet)

Cons:

- More expensive (but if you factor in how many RCT5010's you have to throw away or use for parts, not too much more)
- Heavier

The 5010's have been a good value but I find the rapid slowing of the props with v3's causes the stator to come loose. Glad you found a motor that's in the same ballpark.

Stator comes loose - from braking the props? Damn! :o

I find Tiger motors to be good value for money. They last a lot longer and are better made to begin with. I recently replaced bearings in a set of 3506 after about 40-50 flying hours and they are good as new.

Paul gets motors made now. I am sure he could be persuaded to get custom sizes made up...:

The HE4108 could probably easily be done in 380kv. IMHO they are better than Tigers and more affordable....but also a lot heavier than a 3508. The oversize bearings, axle and bigger size does cost some weight.

Hi Bill,

I will appreciate if you can provide ESC32 settings you finally used for MN3508-29 with 15" props (advance timing, starting voltage, etc).

Thank you,
Sergiu

It was added to the motor DB a few weeks ago.

Making a chart like this is useful for selecting a prop

You want to choose a prop that at 50% throttle, has max efficiency and can lift the AuW you want.
@Bill
It would be interesting if you could generate numbers for this motor and the 15x5 CF prop from RCT and compare the same numbers with the 5010-360Kv from RCT

A prop that is very efficient at 1 payload weight may not be the best performer at a lower or higher payload
