US export restrictions for UAVs

Has anyone come across this discussion at DIYD?

Looks like 3DR products got restricted for export to other countries than North America.
Even UAV dev boards from Sparkfun with NO sensors on it were hit by the restrictions:

Just a matter of time, I'm surprised that more haven't been impacted with ITAR. Your dealing with bozo's that have no idea if the item has any effect on our national defense. I have had to sign paper work to buy an autopilot in the US promising not to export it.

Especially since the hardware is open source, cloned a zillion times abroad so the restrictions will only hinder US companies from exporting...

The US Government is more interested in making (silly such as this) rules than it is in the well-being of the county's businesses. Sad but true.

This is why our company is Canadian and we try to stay away from US suppliers. FLIR was very difficult to deal with so we now have a good supplier from Belgium for example.

Where is AQ officially from?

Current AQ HW is made in Europe...and there is no such stupidity on the horizon here...

In the end it will just mean less business for US companies...I find that really sad.
