Alt/Pos hold not optimum solution?

Postby Ruffio » Mon Dec 10, 2012 12:38 am

Today I fly inside (outside was to cold). I was wonder what will happen when there is no chence for GPS fix.
I get all necessary precautions and switch from manual mode to Alt/Pos hold.
In reaction to the change mode, got a huge acceleration engine, copter nearly crashed into the ceiling.
If you need flyt inside building, only manual mode for now is possible, it is not good.

I hope in the future to separate Alt hold from Position hold.
Do You think its usefull or unusefull option (was there any discussion about that)?

You can disable GPS for altitude control. It's somewhere in the wiki.

Jessestr, thank you.
I was looking for such information in wiki, but I can not find it.
Can someone help me find info about "disable GPS" in alt hold, please.

"Selecting pressure sensor
In firmware 6.5 the selection of altitude measurement needs to be done in the code and then compile. It is possible to use the GPS altitude for the Altitude functions by comment the define USE_PRES_ALT."

You have to comment the line USE_PRES_ALT and then compile it.

There is no way to use just pressure altitude right now w/out GPS being involved. Those instructions are for old firmware and actually describe the opposite effect (turns off the pressure sensor).

The problem of alt. hold w/out GPS has come up before, but unfortunately for now it doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure why since the pressure sensor is much more accurate than GPS altitude readings.

Max, so is there any chance to change for user decision to separate/join (as now) ALT and GPS hold or inteligent use GPS hold when there is no GPS FIX or some other user configuration that enables flying on Alt hold inside building?

Hi Ruffio,

My understanding of the current system is that alt. hold will not work w/out a valid GPS fix. Actually what I was told is that if you fly long enough, and steadily enough, w/out GPS then the AQ will may eventually hold altitude OK (as it learns from other sensor inputs), but this is not really practical in real-world use. I have not heard of a plan to change this, although a few people, including myself, would like to see alt. hold work w/out GPS. But I'm not qualified enough to go mucking about with that stuff yet... :)
